vintage lover

Vintage clothing has really taken off over the past couple of years with every fashionista and glamour girl declaring “It’s vintage” its so trendy and best of all, green.
Vintage is a little different from second hand, in that vintage clothes are classed as such when they are twenty years old, or older. So, (fortunately or unfortunately) the 80’s now also count as vintage.
But second-hand is just as green.  Whatever is not being thrown out and is being worn for years to come is not clogging up a landfill somewhere.
Vintage shopping requires some skill, patience and preferably a day when your allergies aren’t acting up, because let’s face it, there is going to be dust.
Next, you need to find favourite vintage shops, and be prepared to rummage, and keep going back, because you never know when that next one of a kind perfect piece will appear.
One of my favourite places to do my vintage or second-hand shopping is Cape Town. I love wandering through the streets of the CBD, looking through the antique arcade, and finding second hand stores that sell amazing things that you know, no-one else will have.
But, these aren’t the only places to shop- you never know what is going to turn up in a charity shop, a regular second-hand store or even your granny’s cupboard.
A hint though- shopping vintage can be difficult because of sizing issues. You can’t exactly ask the shop assistant if they can order a smaller size from another branch. So look to the eras in which you know your figure type was celebrated. Stick thin? Think Twiggy style 1960’s micro-minis and maxi-dresses. Curvy? Look to the fifties for looks that will have you sizzling like Marilyn Monroe.
Don’t give up though if you can’t find anything in your size. Look to beautiful vintage accessories, beaded bags, fun hats and scarves and wraps.
Also keep in mind the fact that things can be altered if there is a shoulder pad you don’t like or a waist that needs taking in. The possibility with these kind of clothes are endless you just need to have a little bit of imagination.
The good thing about vintage is that clothes are often of better quality, made at a time when things were designed to last. And the longer they last, the longer they stay in your closet and out of our landfills.
If you are frightened by lace, velvet, fringe, and vintage shapes look towards some of our favourite celebs for inspiration. Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani are rocking the forties glam, Scarlet Johannson looks fabulously curvy in fifties style and even Angelina Jolie has been seen sporting a $25 vintage dress on the red carpet.

i love hello kitty

In the real world, Hello Kitty was born in London in 1974, (even though a japanese company named Sanrio made her)when a young Tokyo-based company called Sanrio company co., asked designer Ikuko Shimizu to invent a cartoon character who can relie on to the preteen girl in every girl. Sanrio company co., which already created a bear and a dog (and, curiously, a strawberry) in its growing cast of characters, needed a new character that could be decorated on a plastic coin purse that they were planning to produce.

Shimizu, wanted to create a cat that was peteen-nish for sure, author Marie Y. Moss writes in a book called "Hello Kitty Hello Everything", but one that would certainly prefer a catnap to catnip." And so the designer drafted a white cat wearing a red bow and blue overalls. On November 1, 1974, Sanrio introduced the first picture of Hello Kitty. She sat between a bottle of milk and a pet goldfish, and had turned her head sideways to face her newfound friends. In a word: cute. Or more accurately, Kawaii, the distinctively Japanese breed of cuteness that injects adorable attributes into all aspects of the country's consumer culture.

In her own make-believe world, Hello Kitty wasn't even Japanese. She lives in the suburbs outside London with her father, George White, mother, Mary White, and twin sister, Mimmy White. Yes, Hello Kitty is a nickname for Kitty White and on her birth certificate states Kitty White. How can you to tell the difference between Kitty and Mimmy? Look at both of their bow. Hello Kitty prefers a red bow in her left ear on the other hand Mimmy prefers a yellow bow on her right ear. Other occupants of the White house include Bear, apparently a living teddy-bear and Marley who pops out of the garden.

Sanrio located the Whites in England as a nod to the surging Anglophilia of 1970s Japan, notably the books and illustrations of Beatrix Potter (The Tale of Peter Rabbit) and Lewis Carroll (Alice Through the Looking Glass). Much has been made of Hello Kitty's mouth, or lack thereof. A handful of feminist scholars say her noncommunicative nature perpetuates the submissive female preteen type. While others attribute Hello Kitty's appeal to her blank stare -- onto which fans can project their own emotions.

According to Hello Kitty's official bio on Sanrio's website, "Kitty is a cheerful, warm-hearted little character baking cookies is her forte, but what she enjoys most is eating a slice of her Mama's apple pie!" We also learn that her favorite things include candy, stars, and goldfish, as well as the inevitable "small, cute things." Hello Kitty is in third grade. She weighs the same as three apples and stands five apples tall. Her blood type is A.

Hello Kitty turned 30 in 2004, and although in her world she remains a kitten, her Earthly reality continues to grow. In 1993, Sanrio introduced a boyfriend for her, a similar-looking kitty named Dear Daniel. The two playmates rarely rendezvous, however, because Daniel is perpetually on African safari with his family (dad is a photographer). No worries, correspondence is a Hello Kitty mainstay, hence her fondness for stationery. Other members of her social circle include the teen bunny Kathy, brother and sister monkeys Timmy and Tammy, and boy puppy Jody.

winter with Forevernew- Bohemian rhapsody

`Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a tapestry of rustic inspiration and retro city life in the alluring style of the 1970’s. Winter inspired florals, luxurious tailored coats and antique embellishments echo this era of eclectic sophistication.

Warm winter shades of camel and navy are a royal back drop for the rich and intensely saturated tones of russet, amber, dusk & mulberry. Checks in washed hazel tones work perfectly with military styling and the heritage look that embodies understated glamour.

Baby corduroy shorts worn with hosiery, knee high boots and angora knits add feminine beauty to casual styles. Suede and velvet accessories, wide brim felt hats and faux fur collars worn with silk dresses are perfect for day to night layering.
Silk scarves and leather gloves worn with caplets, capes and lace up boots add romantic detail to this winter collection

Vladimir Tretchikoff

Vladimir Grigoryevich Tretchikoff (13 December 1913-26 august 2006)
was one of the most commercially successful artists of all time - his painting Chinese Girl (popularly known as "The Green Lady") is one of the best selling art prints ever.
Tretchikoff was a self-taught artist who painted realistic figures, portraits, still life and animals, with subjects often inspired by his early life in China and Malaysia, and later life in South Africa. Tretchikoff's work was immensely popular with the general public, but is often seen by art critics as the epitome of kitsch (indeed, he was nicknamed the "King of Kitsch"). He worked in oil, watercolour, ink, charcoal and pencil but is best known for his reproduction prints which sold worldwide in huge numbers. The reproductions were so popular that it was said Tretchikoff was second only to Picasso in his popularity

for the love of vintage

Fashion is one of the things that inspires us the most it allows us to explore our creative side. Cape town is one of the best places to find great vintage clothing and second hand stores is in Long Street is where you should start. The smoothest way to shop is to start near the bottom end and walk towards the mountain (wear comfortable shoes)… that way you can finish your shopping extravaganza with a fabulous Mojito slushi at Lola’s.
Your first brief stop would be the open-air antique market on Church Street – although more for jewellery collectors, you may spot the odd pair of ’70s platform boots or a retro leather jacket.
Best for… pretty sparkly brooches.
Details: Monday-Saturday 8 am-3 pm. Church Street Mall.
From Church Street take a right into Long Street and head to my favouritist vintage shop of them all… tucked right at the back of the Long Street Antique Arcade is the lovely Terri Mullins and her boutique Glitterati.
From the minute you step into that Diagon Alley of musty smells and sparkly bric-a-brac you step into a time machine, and Glitterati is the Vogue magazine that you’d read on your trip through the decades.
Best for… fake fur coats that are sure to keep you warm in the winter months.
Details: 172 Long Street. Tel 082 819 5247. Open Monday – Friday from 10:00-16:30 and Saturday from 9:30-13:30.
A legend in the Cape Town vintage scene is Pandora’s Box, which is one street up and a few blocks away from the Antique Arcade. In the 12 years since it opened many a film star has passed through the doors of this electic second hand shop… just ask owner Nicky Marini. She’ll gladly tell you about the time she met Richard Gere and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Best for… never-been-worn retro ’80s blazers. Grab them while you can!
Details: 79 Loop Street. Tel 021 424 8597.
Back on Long Street, the next must-stop on your vintage tour is Second Time Around, which has been around since 1972! The current owner, Deirdre Sarnitz claims to stock some of the oldest vintage clothing in Cape Town and I can well believe it – one can easily spend hours sifting through her collection.
Best for… well… everything. Although a little pricier than most this is the real deal. And they hire out costumes.
Details: 196 Long Street. Tel 021 423 1674.
Turn right as you come out of Second Time Around and turn right again into Bloem Street where you’ll find hello again. This clothing store, owned by Lynne Groenewald, hosts a combination of young designers and vintage clothing. The second hand clothing, sourced by Wendy van Neel, is mainly ’70s and ’80s and doesn’t form a big part of the store, but it’s worth a peek.
Best for… the vintage Dutch bikes. Sure, they’re not cheap, but at least you’ll be cycling in style.
Details: 44 Bloem Street. Tel 021 4260242.  Check out their blog:
helloagainshop.blogspot.com
Next up is Never on a Sunday, which is, quite literally, never open on a Sunday. Clever hey! Pop in to the newly refurbished Baobab Mall (it looks great) and you’ll find Shane Bezuidenout’s vintage store lurking in the back with retro ’70s and ’80s gear.
Best for… I spotted a lovely leather patchwork over-the-shoulder bag for R125.
Details: Baobab Mall, 210 Long Street.
At this point you can decide to break for that refreshing Mojito, or you can continue to the final two stores which sit very close together. So You is owned by Sharifa Mohamed, and, unlike some of the other more eclectic stores, offers a clean and modern décor with an organised selection of well-maintained garments. It’s also still reasonably priced.
Best for… pretty, shiny dresses to give a formal occasion a retro feel.
Details: 303 Long Street.
Finally we stumble upon seventies and ’80s, which is run by Dawie Kiakia and Justin Kaoma who moved to their new location in November last year. And yes, you guessed it, these guys have sourced a super collection of artefacts from the crazy days – prepare for bight neon puffer jackets and sparkly disco accessories.
Best for… white Wayfarer wannabe’s at R49 each.
Details: 305 Long street.
Top Thrifty Tip: Lynne, from hello again, mentioned that an exciting new children’s secondhand boutique and fun place was opening on the 19 June at 201 Bree Street, Cape Town. Check out www.merrypoppins.co.za for more info.
...and for those of you in DURBAN you are not out of luck...
Bizarre, Musgrove Centre. Tel: (031) 201-4321
Antique and modern jewellery. Anything stylish, including costume jewellery from the 1930s.
Nearly New, cnr Florida and Innes Rd, opposite Mitchell Park. Tel: (031) 312-0939
According to owner Linda Mammsen, the shop has been around for 18 years. She keeps upmarket designer labels, and the clientele ranges from 16 to 80 years old, she says. A landmark in Durban, the shop has an extensive range of evening wear, and specialises in hiring out party outfits. So if it's feather boas, Spanish dresses or anything outrageous or costume partyish you need, this is the place to come. There are also ranges of handbags, shoes, gloves and hats. Many of the customers are from overseas, and say they enjoy the sensation of shopping in a little boutique (very big in London and Paris right now).
Pandora, 82 Pandora Road, Malvern. Tel: (011) 622-4882
YesterYear, 21 Thornton Road, Westdene. Tel: (011) 726-5096
Sometimes very interesting jewellery and accessories can be found on their mannequins!
I hope that helps any of you that are interesed in vintage and the likes...take a day to go visit them for your self you wont regret it...
